LOS ANGELES, California: The NFL announced late last week that its teams and charitable foundation are donating $5 million to help people affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.
So far, the fires have killed ten people, destroyed thousands of homes, and disrupted daily life across the city.
The Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and Houston Texans joined the NFL Foundation in making donations, which will go to local groups helping wildfire victims.
"We are heartbroken over the devastating losses experienced by so many in the Los Angeles area and inspired by the heroism of first responders and residents who have supported their neighbors," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.
During the wild-card playoff game on January 13, Rams players wore custom Los Angeles Fire Department hats and shirts. The game, initially set for Los Angeles, was moved to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, because of the fires.
McVay shared that his family had to evacuate their home in Hidden Hills due to wildfire risks. Though his wife, Veronica, and son, Jordan, were unharmed, and their home was safe, McVay said the evacuation made the situation feel "much more real."
Critical fire weather conditions are expected to continue through January 15.
"When you see as the smoke rose up yesterday, there were a lot of guys that live in proximity, and that hits home in a different way," he said.
"As soon as I knew Veronica and Jordan were good, I was good as well."
